Pune, 18th August 2022: As part of its diversion plan to allow Metro construction, the traffic police have begun gradually imposing modifications in vehicular movement along Ganeshkhind Road.

The Suryamukhi Datta temple Chowk (in front of Central mall) will no longer allow any vehicles arriving from the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk or the E-Square mall to turn right to head towards Model Colony. In order to get to the roads leading to Model Colony and its surrounding regions, they must instead travel further up to the College of Agriculture Chowk and make a U-turn under the flyover.

It would be possible to turn left in the direction of Wakdewadi from College of Agriculture Chowk. Similar to this, vehicles can drive directly to the Sancheti hospital crossing and “Shimla office” crossing.

Shivajinagar traffic sub-inspector Ashok Gorde said, “Construction for the Maha Metro began on August 15 near the Veer Chaphekar crossing and the Suryamukhi Datta temple Chowk. We will decide whether to close sections of the other sides of Ganeshkhind Road as the construction develops. Till then, the route will remain accessible for two-way traffic from the SPPU Chowk and the College of Agriculture crossing.”

He added, “To educate the general public about the diversion and prevent traffic congestion, Maha Metro has painted white lines and put two sign boards. To manage the considerable traffic flow of vehicles at the Datta temple Chowk and Chapekar crossing, we have sent out two police officers and two wardens.”

The Ganeshkhind Road is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city, connecting Shivajinagar and the city’s centre with Baner, Pashan, Aundh, and the surrounding areas. During the morning and evening rush hours, large numbers of commuters use this road going either way, according to road users, who believe the traffic authorities should be doing more to relieve congestion along this stretch of road.
