Pune, 26 November 2024: In a bid to ease traffic congestion on Kondhwa Road, the traffic police will close the left turn at Golibar Maidan Chowk for vehicles coming from Solapur Road and Pulgate bus terminus. The new measure, set to begin on November 27 (Wednesday), will be implemented on a pilot basis for two months.

Wanowrie Traffic Police Inspector Sunil Pandharkar explained that the decision was made to address the persistent traffic bottleneck near the office of the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts and Khatau Bungalow Chowk, which links Napier Road and Wanowrie. “Currently, vehicles coming from Solapur Road take a left turn at Golibar Maidan Chowk to reach Kondhwa, Lullanagar, and Market Yard, among other destinations. This creates congestion at key intersections,” he said.

Under the new plan, vehicles coming from Solapur Road will no longer be able to take a left turn at Golibar Maidan Chowk. Instead, they will be redirected to take a right turn to reach Camp and surrounding areas. Drivers from Solapur Road can also opt to pass through Bhairoba Nullah Chowk or take a left turn from Pulgate bus terminus to reach Kondhwa.

The police have cited another reason for the closure, noting that the heavy flow of traffic from Kondhwa and Lullanagar currently occupies two lanes of Kondhwa Road as vehicles attempt to make a left turn onto Swargate. “The closure of the left turn will help ease this congestion,” Pandharkar said. “We will monitor the situation regularly and decide whether to continue or discontinue the change based on traffic flow.”

To prevent accidents, the police have now installed an L-shaped barricade system, discouraging motorists from making the illegal turn. Pandharkar emphasized that this measure would improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents at the busy junction.
