Pune: Two men arrested for hunting Langur for party in Junnar

Junnar, Pune, June 12, 2020: The Maharashtra forest department has arrested two men for allegedly killing a Langur for the party. They have been booked under Section 9 & Section 51 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The arrested persons have been identified as Eknath Gopal Aswale, age – 29 years, resident of Phulwade in Ambegaon taluka and Ganpat Shimge Hillam, age – 40 years, resident of Dhalewadi, Minher in Junnar taluka of Pune district.

According to the forest department, the incident took place in Dhalewadi Tarfe Minher, about 107 km from Pune city, in the Junnar forest range. They chased the Langur and killed it with the help of a slingshot. They divided its meat among themselves.

As wildlife hunting is punishable offence with three years imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine, a case was registered against the two accused yesterday. They have been charged for offences under sections 9 and 51 of the Indian Wildlife Act, 1972. Range Forest Officer (Junnar) Ajit Shinde produced the before the Junnar court which remanded them to magisterial custody till June 24. The search is going on for other absconding accused persons.

The action was taken under the supervision of Chief Conservator of Forests (Pune region) Vivek Khandekar, Deputy Forest Conservator (Junnar) Jayaramegauda R and Assistant Forest Conservator DY Bhurke.
