Pune, 30th October 2022: It is proposed to build underground canal flowing through the city as a solution to the theft, evaporation and leakage of water released from the Khadakwasla dam through the new Mutha canal. The soil test work for this project has been completed, and the tunnel design is in progress. Soon, the detailed project report (DPR) will be sent to the government for approval.

The state government has given instructions to prepare DPR for this project. Accordingly, the work was given to a private company after inviting tenders. The work of preparing the DPR of this project has been taken up. For that, the work of inspecting the land (soil) along the route through which the tunnel is going to go has been completed. For this, the work of digging bores at every half-kilometre distance was undertaken. Now in the next phase, the work of drawing and budgeting this project is going on. The Water Resources Department said that a detailed project report will be prepared and sent to the government for approval.

Meanwhile, 1.5 thousand crore rupees will be spent for the work of carrying water through a 25 km long tunnel between Khadakwasla Dam and Fursungi. Generally, to build a dam of one billion cubic feet (TMC) capacity, the cost of land acquisition and actual construction of the dam is Rs 1,000 crore. According to this, to build a dam of two and a half TMC capacity, three thousand crore rupees may be required. However, the water resources department also said that the project of taking water through the tunnel is economically viable.

A preliminary plan has been made to carry water through a tunnel measuring 7.80 m wide, 3.90 m high and 1.950 m circular high between Khadakwasla and Fursungi. Due to this tunnel, the capacity of the canal will be 1510 cusecs and all that water will be taken by gravity to Fursungi.
