Pune University Coordination Meeting: Stakeholders Unite for Democratic Approach to Campus Issues

Pune, 18th November 2023: After the recent clashes between various groups, a coordination meeting took place at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) today, bringing together students, teachers, and non-teaching staff associations. The primary agenda was the unanimous development of a democratic working system for managing agitations, meetings, and programs related to various university issues through different organizations. Student organizations emphasized the importance of considering this system collectively.

The meeting, introduced by Dr. Parag Kalkar, had notable attendees including Vice Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, Additional Police Commissioner Ranjan Sharma, In-charge Registrar Dr. Vijay Khare, former Pune Police Commissioner and Emeritus Professor Jayant Umranikar, member of the management council Ravindra Shingnapurkar, and the university’s security director ACP Suresh Bhosale (retd).

Vice Chancellor Dr. Gosavi, in his review of the situation, emphasized the need for students to collaborate in enhancing the university’s image. He stated, “Students are the backbone of the educational complex, and the university’s progress in the future depends on coordination with them.”

Police Commissioner Kumaarr assured students that the police administration would refrain from taking action if all procedures were followed within the legal framework. He urged students and organizations to address internal conflicts through proper channels and refrain from taking matters into their own hands. Kumaarr emphasized that the police do not wish to file cases against students but are obligated to uphold the law.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to democratic processes, fostering collaboration between university stakeholders to address issues effectively.
