Pune, 17th January 2024: In response to a surge in recent incidents of ragging, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has issued stern directives to its affiliated colleges, urging them to take proactive measures to combat and prevent ragging on their campuses. The move comes as part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and well-being of students enrolled in SPPU-affiliated institutions.

Ragging, a form of initiation of negative ritual or social interaction in college, yields adverse psychological, emotional, and physical effects. It induces stress, and emotional distress, harms academic performance, and causes social isolation. In extreme cases, it may lead to physical injuries, fostering fear and anxiety among students. These negative experiences can impact future decisions. Educational institutions condemn ragging, implementing anti-ragging policies and awareness campaigns to ensure a safe and inclusive environment, urging students to report incidents.

The SPPU administration has instructed affiliated colleges to implement comprehensive preventive measures and submit detailed reports outlining the actions taken during both the first and second semesters. The university is taking a no-tolerance stance towards any form of ragging, emphasizing that such incidents should be dealt with promptly and effectively.

In alignment with the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999, applicable to non-agricultural universities and educational institutions in the state, the SPPU has mandated strict adherence to guidelines provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The circular underscores the importance of following legal provisions to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.

The circular also highlights the significance of informing newly admitted students about relevant anti-ragging acts and promoting awareness to prevent incidents. Affiliated colleges are expected to conduct orientation sessions and disseminate information about the consequences of engaging in ragging activities.

To fortify its commitment to eradicating ragging, SPPU has made it mandatory for colleges, institutes, and post-graduate departments to strictly adhere to UGC regulations. This includes implementing preventive measures, conducting regular awareness programs, and taking stringent action against those found guilty of ragging.
