Pune, 24th December 2021: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is significantly affected by the protest called by non-teaching employees to advocate for their demands, including the implementation of the seventh pay commission.

Under the Maharashtra State College and University employee’s Joint Action Committee, the strike was called to draw attention towards pending demands of non-teaching staff of non-agricultural universities and senior colleges in the state to pay 58 months arrears of 7th pay commission. Employees claim that they are overworked and want better working conditions like a five-day workweek.

The staff also demanded a 7th pay commission to non-agricultural university posts, revised scheme of three benefits after 10-20 years of services. Consequently, admissions, examinations, paper evaluations, and other administrative tasks are delayed.

Meanwhile, the director of the higher education department, Dr Dhanraj Mane has instructed the university staff to postpone the strike; and assured them that the state would take a positive decision on their demands.

However, the employees said that the strike will not be called off unless a written assurance is received from the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education.
