Pune: Viman Nagar Residents Flag Footpath Encroachments, Seek Safer Roads for Senior Citizens

Pune, 1st April 2026: Senior citizens from Viman Nagar recently raised concerns about pedestrian safety in the area during a meeting with local corporator Aishwarya Pathare, highlighting issues such as encroached footpaths and speeding vehicles.

The meeting was held on March 17, 2026, and was led by Qaneez Sukhrani, convenor of the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum. Senior citizens Ajit Singh, Anil Tandon, Prem Kumar and B.K. Raji were among those present.

During the discussion, residents pointed out that several footpaths in Viman Nagar have been fully occupied by encroachments, including street vendors, cooked food stalls and other obstructions such as pipes, debris, tree branches and garbage. They said the situation has created serious safety concerns, particularly for senior citizens who are unable to walk safely on the footpaths.

Residents also raised concerns about speeding vehicles on roads affected by the one-way traffic system. According to them, the situation makes it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians, especially senior citizens, to cross the road. They added that many pedestrians are forced to walk on the roads because footpaths are illegally occupied.

Corporator Aishwarya Pathare assured the residents that action would be taken to address the issue of encroached footpaths within three months.

According to the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already started repairing several damaged footpaths in parts of Viman Nagar following the meeting and on the corporator’s instructions.

Residents said they hope the repairs and planned action will improve pedestrian safety in the locality, particularly for senior citizens.
