Pune: Water Supply Expansion Benefits 90,000 Residents in Chikhli and Surrounding Areas
Chikhli, 18th October 2023: A significant development in water supply infrastructure is set to bring relief to approximately 90,000 residents in Chikhli and the surrounding regions. The municipal administration has initiated the direct supply of water from the Chikhli Water Purification Center to the water reservoir at Patil Nagar, aiming to tackle long-standing water scarcity issues.
To address the water needs of the included villages near Bhosari, a comprehensive solution has been devised. The plan involves sourcing combined water from the Pavana and Andhra projects, which, when realized, is expected to bring a lasting solution to the water scarcity concerns.
The municipal administration’s efforts have resulted in the construction of a water tank with a substantial capacity of 20 lakh litres in Chikhli. This reservoir is supplied with approximately 16 million litres per day (MLD) of water from the Ravet embankment of the Pavana project. As a result, residents can now enjoy water supply for 20 to 22 hours on one day and three to four hours on the following day.
Additionally, a new water treatment plant has been established in Chikhli to accommodate water from the Andhra project. This involved the installation of a 600 mm channel to transport the water to the water tank at Patil Nagar. By leveraging the availability of water from both the Pavana and Andhra projects, the administration anticipates a seamless water supply operation.
MLA Mahesh Landge, highlighted the importance of this water supply expansion, stating, “The water supply system is being developed to meet the needs of the growing population in the villages over the next 30 years. The ongoing work on the Bhama Askhed project is also contributing to this endeavour, with Andhra water set to enter the water reservoir at Patil Nagar, effectively addressing the water problem.”
