Pune, 4th November 2022: Cyber thieves have cheated a woman of Rs one lakh after threatening to disconnect the electricity supply. The thief had contacted the woman’s mobile number. The thief had pretended that the officer was speaking from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).

The thief threatened the woman that if the bill is not paid by nine o’clock, the electricity will be cut-off. The woman believed the thief’s claim. The thief asked the woman to download an app called TeamViewer. After the woman downloaded the app, the thief got her confidential bank account information. By misusing this information, the thief withdrew cash of one lakh rupees from the woman’s bank account. After realizing the fraud, the woman lodged a complaint with the police.

For the past few months, fraud cases have been increasing in the city due to the fear of power cuts. Complainants who believe the thieves’ pretence fall into the trap. After the thieves ask to download the app, all the information on the mobile goes to the thieves. As the mobile number is linked to the bank account, thieves misuse this information to withdraw money from the bank account. MSEDCL and the police have appealed from time to time not to believe in the presence of thieves.
