Pune Zilla Parishad’s Special Diet For Malnourished Children Gains Positive Results
Pune, 6th December 2022: 80 per cent of the malnourished youngsters in the Pune area have experienced a considerable improvement in their health as a result of the Zilla Parishad (ZP) officials placing them on a special diet. The remaining 20 per cent, who the ZP has classified as malnourished, have not, however, shown any signs of improvement.
Starting on September 23, all malnourished kids were placed on a 50-day essential food aid programme. Eight times a day, they received specialised cuisine, necessary medical care, and daily health checks at the Gram Bal Vikas Kendra. Regular visits to the Kendra were made by the ZP and health officials to monitor the initiative.
The ZP discovered 846 malnourished youngsters during a health screening programme. Of these, 131 had severe acute malnutrition (SAM), and 717 had moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). Severely underweight children were prevalent in Junnar, Khed, Purandar, Manchar, and Haveli taluka.
Over 80% of the kids, or as many as 677, recovered thanks to the specific food, medication, and attention. There were 107 SAM youngsters and 570 MAM kids in total. However, even after receiving care, 20% of malnourished youngsters still have not shown any signs of improvement.
Ayush Prasad, CEO of ZP, Pune, stated that the district’s malnourished child population is at its lowest point to date. The district’s goal is to have no malnourished children, he added.
“A significant portion—more than 80% of the malnourished kids—showed improvement after being enrolled in the programme. The nutritional status of many children has improved as a result of the medical care and nutritional support we provided for these kids. 677 kids in total have indicated an improvement in their nutritional support,” he said.
