Pune’s Beloved Toy Train “Phulrani” Turns 70, Still A Joyride For All Ages
Pune, 8th April 2025: Pune’s cherished miniature train “Phulrani”, a beloved part of childhood memories for generations, completed 70 years of continuous service today (8th April). A celebration was held at Peshwe Park with children and parents alike reliving the joy of riding the iconic train that has long been a symbol of nostalgia and excitement.
Launched on 8th April 1956, the toy train was inaugurated by a 4.5-year-old girl, Vasundhara Dange, then a preschooler, at a time when it was rare to see children lead such events. Social reformer and educationist Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve had graced the inaugural ceremony, underscoring the project’s significance for child-friendly development.
Originally powered by a diesel engine and designed to resemble a full-sized train, Phulrani has now transitioned into an open-air, jeep-style ride running on battery power — making it both eco-friendly and enjoyable. The train, consisting of three coaches, winds its way through Peshwe Park, offering scenic glimpses of nature — adding to its appeal among children.
To mark its platinum jubilee, a modest cake-cutting event was held at 11 am at Peshwe Park, attended by a group of enthusiastic young riders. The event was coordinated by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Garden Department, under the supervision of Superintendent Ashok Ghorpade.
According to Ghorpade, Phulrani continues to draw large crowds. In the last financial year alone, over 83,000 people — including both children and adults — took a ride on the train, generating revenue of approximately ₹12.41 lakh for the civic body.
The history of Phulrani is closely tied to the evolution of Peshwe Park itself. Initially developed by the PMC, the park — along with the toy train — was managed by the Garden Department. In 2012, the State Government developed an energy park on the premises, bringing the space under its jurisdiction for six years. Now, following the conclusion of the energy park project, PMC has regained control of Peshwe Park, and has since introduced new adventure play installations, reviving the park’s original charm and its iconic toy train.
Phulrani, now greener and still going strong, remains a magical ride that continues to delight young hearts — and rekindle sweet memories in older ones.
