Pune, 22nd June 2026: The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has taken a significant step towards addressing the growing waste management challenge at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi by establishing a solid waste management plant with a processing capacity of 10 tonnes per day. The facility will not only manage waste generated within the IT hub but also produce bio-CNG, which will be supplied as fuel for vehicles.

Hinjawadi IT Park has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years, resulting in a substantial increase in the volume of waste generated daily. The issue of waste disposal has emerged as a major concern, prompting MIDC to develop a dedicated waste management facility within the IT Park.

The project is being developed on a two-hectare plot at an estimated cost of ₹11 crore. MIDC awarded the contract to Abhay Bio CNG Company through a competitive bidding process. Construction began in March 2024 and has now reached its final stage, with the facility expected to be commissioned by December this year.

The project is being implemented on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. Under the agreement, the company will operate and maintain the facility for 10 years and will also be responsible for waste collection across the IT Park.

“Efforts are being made to make the project operational at the earliest. The company will collect segregated wet and dry waste from establishments in the IT Park. In addition, it will undertake the cleaning of roads and open spaces within the IT Park,” said Rajendra Totla, Executive Engineer, MIDC.

According to MIDC officials, the IT Park generates an average of 10 tonnes of waste every day, all of which will be processed at the facility. The project is expected to generate between 150 and 200 kilograms of bio-CNG daily.

“The solid waste management project at the IT Park is in its final stage. We are planning to complete the remaining work and commission the facility by December. Besides solving the waste disposal issue, the project will also enable the production of bio-CNG from waste,” said Nilesh Modhave, Superintending Engineer, MIDC.

A dedicated CNG dispensing station will also be established within the project premises to distribute the bio-CNG produced at the plant.

“Through this project, around 150 to 200 kilograms of bio-CNG will be generated every day. The fuel will be supplied to vehicles through a CNG station planned within the facility, promoting cleaner and more sustainable transportation in the IT Park,” said Kanchan Bhalerao, Chief Executive Officer of Abhay Bio CNG.

Officials said the initiative is expected to significantly improve waste management practices in Hinjawadi while contributing to the development of a circular economy by converting waste into a clean source of energy.
