Pune’s Rambo Circus Embraces Technology; Introduces India’s First Digital Elephant Amid Animal Ban

Pune, 11th February 2025: Despite a nationwide ban on the use of animals in circuses, Pune’s iconic Rambo Circus has found a creative way to captivate audiences by introducing India’s first digital elephant. The circus has also incorporated cloth-made animals like chimpanzees, giraffes, and zebras to recreate the magic of traditional animal acts without violating wildlife protection laws.
For decades, animals played a central role in circus performances across the country. However, after stringent regulations were enforced prohibiting the use of animals in circuses, performers had to adapt, and live animal acts were phased out. In response, Rambo Circus owner Sujit Dilip spent six months in Coimbatore, Kerala, developing a lifelike mechanical elephant to bring a new dimension to the performances.
Standing at approximately 7-8 feet tall and mounted on wheels, the motorized elephant is controlled by an artist seated on its back. The digital creation mimics real-life movements, turning its neck, raising its trunk, and even spraying water to entertain the audience. The project cost around ₹5 lakh.
In addition to the digital elephant, the circus has introduced fabric-based animal replicas. Plans are underway to import a large cloth chimpanzee from Dubai and a jumping kangaroo from Australia to enhance the performances.
“Children love animals in circuses, and keeping them in mind, we created this mechanical elephant that looks just like a real one,” said Sujit Dilip. “While we respect the laws in India, it’s worth noting that live animals are still part of circuses in Europe.”
