Pune, 10th March 2023: On the occasion of World Sparrow Day on 20th March 2023, Umesh Pawar of Aarambh Foundation, Dr Pankaj Koparde of MIT College, and Mahesh Ghorpode are jointly organizing an event to raise awareness about the conservation of sparrows and their habitat.

Sparrows play an important role in the ecosystem, but their population has been declining in recent years due to habitat loss, pesticides, and other threats. Therefore, it is crucial to take action to protect these beloved birds and their habitat.

Pawar said, “Sparrows have evolved to co-exist with humans, but the structure of cities has changed significantly in the last two decades, leading to the almost extinction of sparrows in large cities. To save and conserve sparrows, the initial solution is to provide a small space for them in our houses and to provide food and shelter. The long-term solution is to increase their natural habitat by planting native trees in our surroundings. Aarambh Foundation has been working since 2012 to practically implement these measures and has distributed more than ten thousand bird-saver kits so far.”

This year, Aarambh Foundation and MIT College have set a target of distributing 5000 bird saver kits on a non-profit basis. The kit contains a bird feeder, a sparrow home, a bird watering feeder, and native tree seeds. The sparrow home is designed in such a way that sparrows can lay eggs in it by collecting sticks and twine to make their nests. The predators cannot harm eggs or chicks, and sparrows can live safely. The bird feeder is used to attract sparrows and other birds like rice, millet, sunflower seeds, etc. The bird watering feeder provides drinking water facilities for sparrows. The native tree seeds can be transplanted at home and made into saplings by bird lovers during the coming monsoon season, enriching the nature around us so that sparrows and other birds can build their nests.

A pair of sparrows can lay four to six eggs in 40 days and give birth to chicks. Therefore, 5000 nests and 5000 trees can return more than 1,00,000 sparrows to our surroundings within a year. The aim of the Aarambh Foundation is not limited to bird conservation, but it is also to connect people who are stuck in urban life with nature.

World Sparrow Day is an environmental initiative that aims to raise awareness about the conservation of sparrows and their habitat. Potential visitors to a World Sparrow Day event may include bird lovers, environmentalists, nature lovers, students, local community members, landscape architects, and interior designers. Architects and interior designers can play an important role under this initiative, and builders and developers can plant trees that attract local bird species in their new residential projects.

Arambh Foundation promotes the conservation of sparrows and provides a kit that includes a shelter for sparrows, a feeder, a water bowl, and seeds of local species of plants to attract local birds. Amo Start is an ATG-registered organization, which means an individual or organization donating to an NGO will get a 50% deduction from his/her taxable income.
