Red Alert for Heavy Rain in Pune, PMC Activates Disaster Management Teams
Pune, 19th August 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Pune, prompting the Municipal Corporation to activate its Disaster Management Cell and deploy emergency teams across the city.
Officials said two disaster management teams have been stationed in each of the 15 ward offices of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Along with the Drainage Department staff, local-level employees are patrolling continuously to address complaints. So far, the teams have responded to issues such as broken tree branches and waterlogging on major roads.
Disaster Management Officer Ganesh Sonune confirmed that immediate action has been taken in areas including Baner, Shankarsheth Road, and the Gunjan Talkies locality in Yerawada, where waterlogging was reported.
On Monday morning, Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B. P. chaired a review meeting with officials from the Disaster Management Cell and instructed them to remain on high alert. Ward assistant commissioners have also been directed to closely monitor their respective zones after warnings from the IMD of heavy rainfall.
With continuous showers lashing the city since Monday, the PMC has intensified coordination with the Water Resources Department and the Police to prepare for possible dam water release if rainfall persists in the Ghat region. Authorities assured that efforts are being made to prevent flooding in urban areas.
The PMC stated that adequate manpower, equipment, and disaster management material have been made available. Officials are keeping a close watch on ground-level teams to ensure quick response to emergencies.
