Revised Power Tariffs in Pune Effective from July 1: Relief for Residential Users, Hike for Commercial Consumers

Reported by Siddhi Patil
Pune, 5th July 2025: Electricity consumers in Pune are now subject to revised power tariffs from July 1, following the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) approval of new rates for the financial year 2024–25. While low-consumption residential users will benefit from minor relief, commercial, industrial, and public utility consumers are facing increased financial burdens.
The tariff revision is part of the second year of a three-year plan approved by MERC in 2023, based on a petition submitted by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
Revised Domestic Tariffs
Under the new structure:
Consumers using up to 100 units/month will pay ₹4.08 per unit, down from ₹4.49.
Those consuming 101 to 300 units/month will now be charged ₹7.39 per unit, slightly lower than the earlier ₹7.64.
Consumption above 300 units/month will be billed at ₹10.26 per unit, compared to the previous ₹10.39.
Revised Monthly Fixed Charges for Residential Users:
0–100 units: reduced from ₹115 to ₹95
101–300 units: reduced from ₹145 to ₹120
Above 300 units: reduced from ₹175 to ₹170
Tariff Hikes for Other Categories
While residential consumers see marginal relief, the following categories will experience tariff hikes:
Commercial (Low Tension): ₹9.22 per unit (up from ₹8.91)
Industrial (High Tension): ₹8.17 per unit (up from ₹7.84)
Public Lighting: ₹6.85 per unit (up from ₹6.39)
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (Low Tension): ₹6.00 per unit (up from ₹5.50)
MERC’s Justification
In its order, MERC stated that the revision was made keeping in mind the cost recovery needs of the distribution company, existing subsidy structures, and the need to strike a balance between consumer affordability and the economic viability of MSEDCL.
The updated tariffs came into effect on July 1, 2025, and are available on the official websites of MERC and MSEDCL.
