Run to Beat Diabetes

Pune: More than 100 persons with diabetes, who are members of the city-based Orange Diabetes Foundation, will participate in the Pune Running Marathon on Sunday, October 16 to create and spread awareness about the ailment among the youngsters. Persons with diabetes including men and women in different age categories will run under the theme ‘Run to Beat Diabetes’. As a part of the awareness programme, these enthusiastic runners will also click ‘selfies’ against a backdrop reading ‘I run for my buddy with diabetes! Do you?’
 Persons with diabetes who participated in morning Marathaon event will be felicitated at the Diabetes Education and Awareness Programme to be held the same day at Tilak Smarak Mandir at 4 pm. Veer Chakra Awardee (Kargil war) Col Lalit Rai will be the chief guest for the evening while Mr. Sarang Awad, IPS, Commandant of SRPF will be the guest of honour. Renowned stage personality Mr. Sudhir Gadgil, Mr. Narandra Barhate, Co-founder, CEO, MD, Seed Infotech, Dr. Medha Khasgiwale, Energy Healer, Dr. Dilip Kale, DNB, Dip in Laparoscopy (Germany), Dr. Shailaja Kale, renowned Diabetologist and Dr. Smita Ghule, President Pune Doctors’ Association will address the gathering. Dr. Shailaja Kale through her foundation has been involved in creating awareness about diabetes through events, publications and various other activities for the last 24 years. Messages and information about diabetes and its control have reached out to masses through different events, books, DVDs and a quarterly newsletter Orange Diabetes Newsletter Highlighting the need to educate the younger generation about diabetes, renowned diabetologist Dr. Shailaja Kale, said, “The younger generation is not aware about the existence of and the threat that diabetes is posing to the entire country.
 Type-2 diabetes is spreading fast in India at a very young age, calling for increased efforts towards creating awareness in order to control the possible disaster,” she said adding that, the aim behind encouraging Persons with diabetes to participant in the marathon is; only to show that Persons with diabetes need not control or curb physical activities. Giving examples of persons with diabetes have excelled in physical activities like cycling even at high altitudes, swimming in the open waters for long distances and even playing cricket for the country, she emphasized, “Running, and not walking, is the best way to postpone or prevent diabetes. Great physical exercise helps to avoid diabetes as well as it’s complications. Dr. Dilip Kale emphasized the importance of good physical health of young girls. Obesity and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) are very common problems in adolescent girls. These lead to future issues like infertility, obesity and diabetes in women at a young age. Activities like running is the best exercise for young girls to correct hormonal imbalance and to avoid future diabetes.
