Pune, 11th April 2023: The state highway police division has proposed to Ideal Road Builders (IRB) infrastructure developers and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to create additional halting spaces along the busy Pune-Mumbai expressway.

The proposal is a response to the increasing number of accidents resulting from unauthorized halting on the expressway, which links two of the most heavily populated cities in Maharashtra.

At present, there are only two halting spaces located at food malls on the expressway, which are inadequate for heavy vehicles. This has led to chaotic and unsafe parking on the road’s shoulder, jeopardizing the safety of motorists and impeding traffic flow. Consequently, the state highway police have appealed to IRB to promptly establish more halting spaces at appropriate intervals along the expressway.

The proposed halting spaces would provide essential amenities such as restrooms, food stalls, and fuel stations to reduce the risk of accidents and traffic congestion. This proposal has gained strong support from various stakeholders, including commuters, transport associations, and safety advocacy groups, who stress the need for more halting spaces on the Pune-Mumbai expressway. They have called upon IRB and MSRDC to prioritize this issue and ensure the safety and convenience of all road users.

Lata Phad, superintendent of state highway police, stated, “The Pune-Mumbai expressway is a crucial transportation route with heavy traffic round the clock. The lack of adequate halting spaces is causing safety hazards and unnecessary delays for commuters. Our request to IRB is to build several parking lots that offer proper lighting, security measures, and amenities to provide a secure and orderly parking environment.”

The proposed halting spaces would also serve as a welcome respite for commuters traveling along the expressway. The expressway is an essential transportation artery with a constant flow of heavy traffic.

The lack of adequate halting spaces has been a long-standing issue, and the police division has been working to address it. The creation of additional halting spaces along the Pune-Mumbai expressway will be a significant step in improving the safety and convenience of all road users.
