Samsung Hiring 1000 Engineers For R&D To Consolidate The No.1 Position In India
NEW DELHI, India – January 31, 2018 Samsung India’s R&D centres will hire 1,000 engineers from top engineering colleges including IITs, NITs and IIITs for 2018. Majority of engineers being hired are for new age domains such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, biometrics, natural language processing, augmented reality and networks including 5G.
Apart from IITs and NITs, Samsung is also hiring quality talent from other premier institutes such as Delhi College of Engineering, BITS Pilani, Manipal Institute of Technology and IIITs among others.
Last year Samsung hired 800 engineers for its R&D facilities, out of which 300 were from IITs.
This year too, Samsung is hiring over 300 students from IITs for roles across domains such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, natural language processing, augmented reality and networks including 5G.
Samsung has a total of 32 R&D centres across the world.
Samsung India has 3 R&D centres and 2 manufacturing facilities in India.
R&D centres are in Bangalore, Noida and Delhi.
The one in Bangalore is Samsung’s largest R&D centre outside Korea.
Apart from the traditional domain of computer science, students have been picked from streams such as electrical engineering, mathematics and computing, applied mechanics, and statistics amongst others.
Samsung R&D centre in Bangalore, Samsung’s largest R&D centre outside Korea, has expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality and networks including 5G.
The Noida facility plays key role in development of biometrics, mobile software development, multimedia and data security.
Delhi works primarily on research related to high-end televisions, other consumer electronics products as well as the operating system Tizen.
Samsung India has been making in India and doing R&D in India since 1996.
Samsung R&D centre in Bangalore and the manufacturing facility in Noida were set up in 1996.
The Indian R&D centres contribute to global products as well as develop India specific innovations for the local market here.
The company’s research institutes have developed several ‘Make for India’ innovations such as S-bike mode, Ultra Data Saving mode, and ActivWash+ for washing machines, among others that are today part of Samsung products sold in India and some other emerging markets. Some of these innovations are part of Samsung’s global products.
– Samsung brings innovative products, customized features with cutting-edge technology which are made for India, and in India.
– Most recent example of our work is the development of Bixby Voice capability for India that was announced with the launch of the flagship Galaxy Note8 smartphone. Being true to Samsung’s legacy of bringing customer centric innovations for the Indian market, the intelligent interface Bixby has now been optimized to understand English in Indian accents.
– We have also contributed to the launch of Samsung Pay in India with inclusion of support for debit cards as well as integrating mobile wallet Paytm and the government’s Unified Payments Interface into the app.
– The new camera features, including slow/fast motion, panorama, and others in Galaxy S8 and now the bokeh mode while taking selfie in Galaxy Note8 were also developed at SRI-B
– SRIs have recently also developed a Social Camera for millennials. This has been integrated in the recently launched Galaxy J7 Max and J7 Pro. Samsung’s Social Camera allows users to instantly share, edit and discover content. The development of Social Camera involved a lot of collaboration among Samsung India’s teams. SRI-Bangalore developed Social Share, Live Filters, Live Stickers within the smartphone camera, while SRI-Noida pitched in by developing the social footprint – Geo-Like and augmented reality differentiation.
Engineers at Samsung go through a continuous learning process to keep themselves updated. We have an M Tech course with IIIT-Bangalore where professors from the institute come to the Samsung R&D campus in Bangalore to teach over the weekend to students who are selected through a rigorous entry process.
If you look at what we do with the IITs, it is not just about hiring. We engage with the IITs and other institutes through the year with different kind of programs.
For example:
Samsung launched the Samsung IoT Innovation Lab, under its Samsung Digital Academy initiative, with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi at the latter’s campus
2017 is the 7th year of the awards. Conducted at different IITs every year in association with entrepreneurship cells. Seek to support & encourage young talent/ professionals who have incorporated innovative approaches, sought to improvise different systems & processes and developed indigenous products & services
Indian Research Network is a 1-day symposium where each year we identify a topic and conduct the session with top management from SRI-B and researchers in that domain, with the idea to network with top faculties and explore collaboration opportunities.
SRI-B has an agreement with IIIT-Bangalore for imparting M.Tech. with specialisation in Computer Science for its employees. Employees have to go through a rigorous entrance examination and an internal selection process to get a seat for the M.Tech. program. Professors from IIIT-B teach at the Samsung Campus in Bangalore over the weekend.
Towards our vision to develop research acumen at SRI-B, we collaborated with top engineering institutes like IITs for sponsoring employees to PhD programs. We initiated this program with an objective to “Reskill” our talented employees towards new skills/research domains.
The program commenced in the year 2014. Till date, we have sponsored around 5 employees for the External Research Sponsorship program- PhD to IIT/IISc. Employees pursuing such programs are continuously encouraged, supported and being mentored internally by Senior Mentors/Researchers at Samsung.
“Samsung is extremely bullish on R&D in India. We have been here for over 22 years. The three R&D centres in India work on several cutting edge technologies. As part of our ‘Make for India’ initiative, R&D centres in India also work on developing innovations that are centred on the needs of Indian consumers and also contribute to innovations for global products,” said Mr. Dipesh Shah, Managing Director, Samsung R&D Institute India, Bangalore and Global Senior Vice President, Samsung.
“We will be hiring around 1,000 engineers from top engineering colleges this year across the 3 R&D centres in India, of which over 300 will be from IITs. A majority of them will hired for domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Signal Processing, Computer vision, Mobile security and Biometrics among others. There is a large need for talent,” he said.
