Sassoon hospital demands 200 more beds to handle to rising COVID patients

Pune, June 7, 2020: Sassoon hospital is dealing with the scarcity of beds, experts and staff due to the stemming of ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The number of COVID19 cases in the city is at surge, the private as well as the government hospitals and intensive care unit, are falling short of beds and supply. At present, the hospital has 133 confirmed Coronavirus patients undergoing treatment along with 32 patients suspected to contain the virus.

Citing how contagious the virus is, Sassoon hospital has written to the state government to provide them with 200 beds and more staff to deal with the expansion of the pandemic. The need to keep infected patients in isolation medical wards and the use of advanced medical facilities for ‘critically ill’ patients to monitor vital signs, provide mobility and comfort to the patient is must. Therefore, a proposal has been sent to the state government, requesting them to provide, temporary position of physicians, intensivists, paediatricians, ICU technicians, and nurses. 

The officials say the work to increase the capacities of these hospitals has already begun and additional beds will be available to the public soon. The number of COVID19 patients has reached 9307 in Pune district out of which 5936 have been cured while 407 have died. There are still 2964 active patients admitted in various hospitals.
