Savitribai Phule Pune University Embarks on Computerized Cataloging of Ancient Manuscripts

Pune, 11th December 2023: In a significant step towards preserving and promoting India’s rich knowledge tradition, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has approved Dharohar, a Udaipur-based non-profit organization, for the computerized descriptive cataloguing of ancient manuscripts housed in the Department of Sanskrit and Prakrit Languages.

The formal agreement, signed by University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Suresh Gosavi and Dharohar Institute Director Sanjay Singal, marks the beginning of a collaboration aimed at safeguarding and making accessible a valuable collection of ancient manuscripts. The signing ceremony was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Parag Kalkar, Registrar Prof. Vijay Khare, and other distinguished personalities associated with the university.

During the event, Prof. Gosavi emphasized the contemporary need to protect and preserve ancient texts, ensuring their availability for research in the modern context. Recognizing manuscripts as the oldest and largest source of Indian knowledge, the initiative aligns with the broader goal of safeguarding and disseminating cultural heritage.

Dharohar, known for its commendable work in the preservation of cultural heritage, has initiated computerized cataloging by acquiring images of manuscripts from various institutions. The organization’s efforts have culminated in a list of fifty-eight thousand manuscripts, accessible to Sanskrit scholars and researchers via the website [http://www.sangrah.org](http://www.sangrah.org).

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, Singhal stressed the significance of making these manuscripts available to the Dharohar Institute. The Dharohar Institute, dedicated to the dissemination of Indian knowledge, will play a crucial role in ensuring wider access to these invaluable manuscripts.
