Pune, 9th March 2026: In a move aimed at curbing over-speeding and improving road safety, Pune Rural Police have installed advanced laser speed cameras on the Mumbai–Pune National Highway in the Lonavala and Vadgaon Maval areas. The high-tech devices are intended to identify and take action against drivers who violate speed limits and other traffic rules.

According to Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeepsingh Gill, a large number of accidents on highways occur due to excessive speed and driver negligence. To reduce such incidents and ensure safer travel, the police have begun using laser speed cameras that can accurately record the speed of vehicles.

The cameras have been installed at three locations on the old Mumbai–Pune Highway along the Lonavala–Vadgaon Maval stretch. They are capable of functioning both during the day and at night and can measure vehicle speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour. The project has been implemented with the support of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety and the Global Road Safety Partnership.

Officials said the cameras will not only detect over-speeding but will also capture photographs and video footage of vehicles violating traffic rules. The system can identify riders without helmets and drivers using mobile phones while driving, enabling authorities to take appropriate action.

Police data shows that Pune district records a high number of serious road accidents, with pedestrians and two-wheeler riders accounting for a large proportion of fatalities. Authorities believe that installing these laser speed cameras will help control reckless driving and reduce accidents on the busy highway.

Currently, the cameras have been installed on a trial basis in Lonavala and Vadgaon Maval. Officials will assess their effectiveness before expanding the system to other accident-prone stretches.
