New Delhi, 12th December 2024: Elon Musk’s Starlink is preparing to launch its innovative ‘Direct to Cell’ satellite internet service in India. This groundbreaking technology promises to revolutionize connectivity, allowing users to make calls and browse the internet even in areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable.

Set to be launched next year, the ‘Direct to Cell’ service eliminates the need for cellular towers, offering a direct connection to satellites orbiting the Earth. This service will work on existing smartphones, without requiring users to purchase new devices.

The technology works in four key steps:

1. Satellite Connection: In areas where mobile towers fail to provide service, users will be able to connect directly to satellites. This eliminates the reliance on traditional network towers, providing connectivity even in remote locations.

2. LTE Integration: The technology will utilize LTE (Long-Term Evolution), which previously depended on towers. Now, LTE will handle tasks like making calls and sending messages, even without network coverage.

3. eNodeB Requirement: A critical component of the system is eNodeB, which facilitates the connection between smartphones and satellites. Without this hardware, users will not be able to connect to the satellite network.

4. Role of Telecom Operators: Telecom operators will play a crucial role in implementing the service. Before its launch, Starlink will need to form agreements with Indian network providers. An additional fee will be required to access this satellite technology, though the exact pricing structure is yet to be finalized.

Recently, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted ongoing discussions with major players in space communication on X. He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing telecom services in India, aiming to provide high-quality, affordable services while addressing sectoral challenges. Scindia assured that India’s position in the global telecom and space industries would significantly improve in the near future.
