This Man In Pune Wants Women To Learn Self Defence, Free Of Cost

Pimple Saudagar, 1st January 2022: On New Year’s day, martial art trainer Naresh Mhetre (38) has kickstarted a massive self-defence training program at his Universal Fight and Fitness Club in Pimple Saudagar.

Mhetre, who has 12 years of experience in training people, informed, “Any woman can walk between 6 am and 9 pm and train in various self-defence techniques and also take refresher courses throughout the year, free of cost.”

An incident that had taken place many years ago while he was studying in college made him start the free self-defence classes for women. He began the free classes five years ago but did not get much response.

“I organised free self-defence classes every second and fourth Saturday but parents were reluctant to send their daughters. Considering the incidences of crime against women I thought that a free self-defence course will get a good response but I was surprised a bit as I realised that parents were ready to send them to hobby classes but not for self-defence training. When I approached housing societies to organise free sessions in their clubhouses, the chairman would demand Rs 2500 or more”, recalled Mhetre, who had been training people since he was 18 years old.

“I am unable to understand that why women think that they cannot master the art of martial arts. I even tried to convince the mothers who come to drop their kids for training but they laugh it off and cite their age as the reason to not learn self-defence. As a trainer I have experienced that women are better learners, they are dedicated and more focused. That’s why I want them to come and learn free of cost. When I talk to mothers who come to drop off their kids, they would laugh it off and say that they cannot learn self-defence at this age. This is completely wrong. Even a single woman can fight off her attackers because of my training then it would be a victory for my life as a trainer,” added Mhetre.
