New Delhi, 6th August 2021: The Indian women’s hockey team may have missed out on a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, but won everyone’s heart with its game. Against Great Britain, the Indian team made a strong comeback after going 0-2 in the first quarter  to take a 3-2 lead in the second quarter. By the third quarter the score was tied at 3-3, but in the fourth quarter, Great Britain scored a goal to push India on the back foot. In the end it proved to be the deciding score and Great Britain won the bronze medal 4–3. In this way, the journey of India women’s hockey ended at number four in the Tokyo Olympics.

During the first quarter both teams failed to score a single goal. They tried their best to put pressure on the opposing team by scoring the first goal, but neither of them got success.

 The second quarter was  extremely well played by both the teams. Ellie Rayer scored the first goal of the match for Great Britain. In this way, Great Britain got a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Sarah Robertson scored in the 24th minute and Great Britain went 2-0 up. Both were field goals.

India did not give many penalty corners to Great Britain. After this, the Indian women’s team retaliated strongly, scoring three goals by the end of the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead. In the 25th and 26th minutes, Gurjit Kaur converted two penalty corners to give India a 2-2 lead and then Vandana Katariya scored another goal in the 29th minute to take India 3-2 lead .

From the beginning of the third quarter, the Great Britain team started trying to erase India’s lead. They also found success in the 35th minute, when captain Hollie Pearne-Webb overshadowed the Indian defense and goalkeeper Savita to score the equalizer for Great Britain. In this way the match was tied at 3-3. In the last second of the third quarter, India took a referral for a penalty corner and got a penalty corner.. Indian team failed to score. After the third quarter the score was tied at 3-3.

The Indian team suffered a major setback at the start of the fourth quarter when Udita got the yellow card along with back-to-back penalty corners. Grace Balsdon converted a penalty corner in the 48th minute to give Great Britain a 4-3 lead.
