Pune, 18th June 2025: With the monsoon rains intensifying across the Western Ghats, the Pune District Collector has ordered the closure of Varandha Ghat—a key mountain pass connecting Pune to Mahad via Bhor—to heavy vehicles for the next three months. The precautionary decision comes amid growing concerns over landslides, soil erosion, and hazardous road conditions during the rainy season.

According to officials, the ghat’s narrow, winding roads become especially dangerous during monsoon months due to ongoing road widening works, muddy terrain, and frequent slope failures. The directive is aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters and preventing serious accidents involving large vehicles such as trucks and buses.

Additional Restriction During Weather Alerts
The official order adds that during red or orange alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), even light motor vehicles will not be allowed to ply on the ghat. Authorities stressed that the total shutdown of Varandha Ghat during intense weather warnings is necessary to minimize the risk of mishaps.

Varandha Ghat: A Snapshot
Length: Approx. 10 km
Route: Connects Pune (via Bhor) to Mahad and the Konkan region
Topography: Steep slopes, thick forest cover, scenic waterfalls
Hazards: Landslides, tree falls, road subsidence, and poor visibility

While popular among tourists for its breathtaking views, Varandha Ghat is also a vital transportation link, especially for local residents and those traveling to the coastal Konkan belt. However, during the monsoon, its treacherous curves and weak geological stability make it particularly vulnerable to natural disruptions.

Public Safety:
Officials emphasized that the temporary closure is a precautionary measure intended to prevent accidents and loss of life. The restriction will remain in place until road conditions improve and widening work is safely completed.
Meanwhile, commuters are advised to use alternative routes and follow updates from the district administration and traffic authorities.
