Pune, 16th February 2024: In response to a disturbing incident, the Pune city police have suspended an assistant sub-inspector and two constables for dereliction of duty. An inquiry uncovered that the officers had misbehaved with and ignored a complaint filed by Rohidas Jadhav (28), the owner of an electrical shop.

The shocking turn of events saw Jadhav setting himself on fire in front of the Wagholi police chowkey on Tuesday, leaving him with severe burns amounting to 90%, and his condition deemed critical.

Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Manoj Patil took decisive action on Wednesday evening, suspending the three policemen responsible for their failure to address Jadhav’s complaint. The shop owner had approached the Wagholi police chowkey, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Lonikand police station, to report a dispute with his neighbor concerning parking in their housing society.

This suspension follows the recent transfer of senior police inspectors Vishwajeet Kaingade and Ravindra Shelke from Lonikand and Hadapsar police stations, respectively. The transfers were prompted by their perceived “inept handling” of incidents at police chowkies under their supervision. City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed the transfers, citing the inquiry’s findings regarding the inadequate response to two incidents within their jurisdictions.

One such incident involved the abuse and assault of a woman domestic help at Magarpatta police chowkey, falling under the Hadapsar police station, on February 8.
