Pune, 3rd August 2024: Landslides in Chooralmala and Mundakkai have devastated Kerala, with the death toll surpassing 344. More than 250 people are still missing, and relentless rainfall has hindered rescue operations, which were cut short on Thursday. The district administration has acknowledged its failure to take proactive measures, and rescue efforts continue with advanced equipment and over 1,300 personnel involved.

Renowned actor and Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army, Mohanlal, arrived in Wayanad to support rescue efforts. He met with officers at the Meppadi Army camp before proceeding to the affected areas. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall warning for North Kerala, with yellow alerts in four districts.

In response to the tragedy, the state government has issued guidelines for the burial of remains, emphasizing DNA and dental sample collection to identify the deceased. Bodies will be assigned identification numbers and buried if unclaimed after 72 hours. Immediate burials may be ordered due to decomposition concerns.

The landslide has not only impacted humans but also domestic animals. The animal husbandry department is struggling to provide feed, with cattle in Vanarani Estate receiving aid only on the fourth day. The tragedy has also struck educational institutions, with the destruction of a school building in Vellarmala, where 49 children are missing.

The district administration has admitted its failure to evacuate residents from the Chaliyar banks despite heavy rainfall warnings. The ongoing rescue efforts reflect the immense challenges and heartbreak facing the Wayanad community.
