Hyderabad, 9th October 2023 – In the 6th official match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, New Zealand displayed their cricket prowess by securing a comfortable 99-run victory against the Netherlands. New Zealand, one of the tournament favourites, had previously won their World Cup opener against England, while the Netherlands faced a loss in their inaugural match against Pakistan. The clash took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, where the Netherlands won the toss and elected to bowl first.
New Zealand’s opening batsman, Devon Conway, contributed 32 runs off 40 balls before being caught by Bas de Leede on Roelof van der Merwe’s delivery. Will Young, the other opener, added 70 runs off 80 balls to the scoreboard before falling victim to Paul van Meekeren’s delivery, caught by Bas de Leede. Rachin Ravindra continued his impressive form, scoring 51 runs in 51 balls before Scott Edwards caught him on Roelof van der Merwe’s delivery. Daryl Mitchell and temporary captain Tom Latham also made notable contributions, helping New Zealand post a competitive total of 322 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
For the Netherlands, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, and Roelof van der Merwe each secured 2 wickets, while Bas de Leede managed to claim one wicket.
Chasing a target of 323 runs, the Netherlands’ opening batsmen struggled to make an impact. Colin Ackerman put up a valiant effort, scoring 69 runs off 73 balls before being caught by Matt Henry on Mitchell Santner’s delivery. Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Captain Scott Edwards, and Sybrand Engelbrecht made modest contributions, but the lower-order collapse prevented the Netherlands from mounting a significant challenge. In the end, the Netherlands were all out for 223 runs, falling 99 runs short of their target.
Mitchell Santner was the star performer for New Zealand with the ball, claiming an impressive 5-wicket haul in his 10 overs, while conceding just 59 runs. Matt Henry contributed with 2 wickets, and Rachin Ravindra managed to secure one wicket.
The Netherlands continues to seek an upset against a top-tier team, while New Zealand maintains its strong form in the tournament.
