Pune, 22 January 2022: “The decision to do a particular role depends on the actor himself but our past should not encumber our present. Dr. Amol Kolhe’s decision to play Nathuram Godse in the film ‘Why I killed Gandhi’ is his personal choice as an actor. Some people support Godse, some oppose him while discussing such topics but for me both Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse are history and the past should be buried,” said acclaimed film actor Nana Patekar.

He was speaking during the 3rd day of Vasantotsav 2022 with Dr. Sameeran Walvekar. Vasantotsav 2022 is organized by Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Prathishthan under the aegis of MIT World Peace University with the help of Gokhale Construction and is being held at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch.

“People make statues of greats conferred with Bharat Ratna, celebrate their anniversaries and forget about them. But in reality, the thoughts and teachings of these greats have been buried under the platform on which they are made. They have received such dignity because they had a hunger of social reform within them. We have to appreciate and respect those teachings and implement them in our lives,” Patekar said.

While speaking about his 2016 film- Natsamrat, Nana said that playing the lead in the film was one of the most significant and a difficult role as an actor and that was also one of the reasons why he never performed the role in theatre. “The role of Ganpat Belwalkar in Natsamrat was very provocative and exceptional and for that every talent that an actor possesses had to be revealed. There were great actors like Shriram Lagoo who performed that role and I can’t compare myself with anyone of them,” he added.

While discussing about his NGO Naam Foundation, Nana said all the social work and activities done by the foundation have been done under the budget of Rs. 30 Crores for which about Rs. 250 Crores had to be utilized. He said that the entire credit for that goes to team of government officers and people working under the foundation.

“Along with farmers, lots of other people have been committing suicides in India and it has increased in past 3 years. We as citizens have to take up the challenge and have to do something to stop that as it is not restricted at political levels. But whatever one wants to do, they should not click photos and post on social media. They should do it from their heart,” he said.
