Koppal, 5th April 2023: The Central Railway (CR) has made a deal with Green Infra Wind Energy Ltd. (GIWEL) to purchase 50 Mega Watts (MW) of wind energy. In the Koppal region of Karnataka, GIWEL will construct a wind park with 24 turbines, each with a 2.1 MW capacity.

The factory will be put into operation, according to CR officials, in September 2024. A total of 160 million units of energy per year, or 5% of the traction power needed by Maharashtra’s railways, will be provided by GIWEL.

According to CR officials, the agency presently purchases 56.4 MW of wind energy from Sangli-based Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. and Pavan Energy. The overall capacity would be 106.4 MW once the GIWEL plant is operational.

Officials stated that the CR is making attempts to find solar power sources for traction and that contracts for 61 MW and 180 MW of solar power, respectively, have been awarded to Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Ltd and IRCON Renewable Power Ltd. By April 2024, these are anticipated to be active.

Since 2014, the rate of railway electrification has quickened, and CR has now completed 100% electrification of all broad gauge routes, reducing its yearly carbon footprint by 5.204 tonnes and saving $1,670 crore.
