Yellow Alert Issued in Pune District; Increased Water Discharge from Khadakwasla and Varasgaon Dams
Pune, 19th September 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Pune district on Friday, warning of light to moderate rainfall in the next three hours. Similar conditions are expected in Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Beed, Jalna, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Nashik, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Thane.
In response to rising inflows, water discharge from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha river basin was increased from 4,675 cusecs to 6,843 cusecs at 8 am. Officials have cautioned that further adjustments may be made depending on rainfall intensity and weather conditions.
Meanwhile, at 7 am, the Varasgaon Dam released a total of 1,344 cusecs into the riverbed. Of this, 744 cusecs were released through the discharge channel and 600 cusecs via the power generation plant.
Mohan Bhadane, Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Mutha Canal Irrigation Sub-Division, Swargate, Pune, confirmed the releases and advised citizens to stay alert near riverbeds as water levels may fluctuate.
Authorities have urged residents living along riverbanks and low-lying areas to exercise caution, as dam discharges may be further reduced or increased depending on rainfall over the catchment areas.
