26 November 2019, Pune: India is battling full-blown crisis of obesity that has triggered critical warnings among people. To tackle the heavy burden of obesity, J T Foundations in association with Apollo Spectra Hospital and Pune’s Symbiosis Institute of Business Management organized a 3 km walkathon in the campus, at 7:00 am to raise awareness on staying physically active to tackle obesity. Also, BMI checkup of the students will be done with the help of Apollo Spectra Hospital, Pune.

There is a stunning rise in the obesity problem. Weight gain has been accelerating owing to a myriad of factors that are fast food expansion and a sedentary lifestyle. Reportedly, 108 million children and more than 600 million adults with BMI over 30 are a threshold for obesity. With an aim to bring down the obesity rates, a walkathon conducted in the campus of Pune’s Symbiosis Institute of Business Management will help people to understand the ill-effects of obesity.

Dr Jayashree Todkar, Director, JT Foundations highlighted, “Having excess body fat can be described as obesity which is considered unhealthy for a person’s stature. Obesity is the mother of all diseases as it can invite heart disease, a stroke, blood pressure, and joint problems. The world is facing the problem of obesity. According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 76% of Indian children are physically inactive which is alarming. JT Foundations is working relentlessly since 2003 to fight obesity and create awareness amongst children, adolescents, and adults to overcome the fatal combination of obesity and diabetes. If not dealt at the right time, our next generation may die due to obesity that is also known as a ‘Silent Killer’.”

She added, “Today, many of us follow a sedentary lifestyle and are overweight. It is essential to get rid of obesity by adhering to a healthy lifestyle and a well-balanced diet. Thus, the sole motto behind conducting the walkathon was to educate students about how obesity can damage the body. The students underwent a body composition analysis test and BMI evaluation, after the walkathon, and were given guidance about problems due to obesity; the need of physically activity and solutions to get shed those excess kilos.”

Students also pledged to stay fit and encourage their families and the society to take up activities that will help them keep obesity at bay. “Cutting down on junk food loaded with calories, playing for an hour, every day to stay in top shape, and minimizing the screen time that leads to weight gain may prevent obesity,” concluded Dr Todkar.
