33rd Senior National Fencing Championship In Pune From March 25

Pune, 21st March 2023: Over 700 fencers from across the country will take part in the 33rd Senior National Fencing Championship, which will be held in Pune from March 25-28. The Championship hosted by Fencing Association of India along with Maharashtra Fencing Association and DY Patil International University, will be held at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Mhalunge-Balewadi, informed FAI President Satej Patil.

The Championship will be played in three disciplines – Foil, Epee and Sabre for both men and women – in two categories – individual and team, where the fencers will vye for the top honours. One of the major attractions of the national championship is the participation of star fencer CA Bhavani Devi, who took part in the Tokyo Olympics. Bhavani Devi will participate in the Women’s Individual Sabre event, informed Satej Patil.

The individual championships will start with the pool round, followed by round of 64, then round of 32, round of 16, round of 8, semi-finals and finals, while the team event will start round of 32, followed by round of 8, semi-finals and finals.

“We are providing state-of-the art facilities for the fencers. There have been 14 piste, which have been created for the Championship. Nutritious food after consultation from specialized dieticians focusing on the calorie intake will be provided to each of the fencers, who will take part in the championship,” Satej Patil said.

The opening ceremony will be held on March 25 at 2 PM, while Maharashtra Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Girish Mahajan will be present for the concluding ceremony, to be held on March 28 at 3 PM.

Meanwhile, for all the fencing enthusiasts, results of the 33rd Senior National Fencing Championship will be updated every two hours on the official Facebook page of Fencing Association of India, while a few of the matches will be later published on the Association’s YouTube Channel.
