Pune, 1st December 2023: The dams supplying water to the city are experiencing lower water levels this year, prompting the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to consider water cut measures. In a written communication to the Water Resources Department, the PMC has expressed its intention to implement a one-day water cut per week, likely to commence from the new year.

After the monsoon season, the dams have recorded decreased water storage compared to the previous year. Consequently, only 16 billion cubic feet (TMC) of water has been earmarked for the Pune Municipal Corporation. This decision was reached during a meeting of the Canal Advisory Committee. Despite the limited allocation, the municipality continues to draw 1600 million liters per day (MLD) of water from the dams, as per usual.

The Water Resources Department, raising concerns over the deviation from the committee’s decisions, communicated with the Municipal Corporation through a letter. In response, the PMC assured the department of using water judiciously. However, the Water Resources Department requested specific details regarding the concrete measures that would be implemented.

In a written response, the PMC outlined plans to save two TMC of water out of the allocated 16 TMC for the Water Resources Department. This conservation effort is expected to result in a reduction of water supply by one day per week. Additionally, ongoing initiatives, such as the replacement of old water pipes, aim to minimize water distribution leakage.

As a consequence, it is anticipated that the city will face a one-day water cut every week in the near future.
