Maharashtra to Reduce Domestic Electricity Rates by 23% Over Five Years: Vishwas Pathak
Mumbai, 24th January 2025: Domestic electricity rates in Maharashtra are set to see a significant reduction of up to 23% over the next five years, announced Vishwas Pathak, Independent Director of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and Chief Spokesperson of the BJP in the state.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP state office, Pathak attributed this reduction to the Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Channel 2.0 scheme, which focuses on enhancing solar power generation across the state.
The scheme aims to generate 16,000 MW of solar power within the next two years, enabling daytime electricity supply to farmers and benefiting domestic and industrial consumers alike. Pathak highlighted that the electricity rates for domestic consumers using up to 100 units will be reduced from ₹7.65 per unit to ₹5.87 per unit. For consumers using 101 to 300 units, the tariff is expected to drop from ₹13.49 to ₹11.82 per unit. The rate reduction will be implemented in phases starting April 1, 2025.
Pathak stated, “The aggressive implementation of solar energy initiatives under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made this possible. Farmers, domestic consumers, and industrial users will all benefit from the reduced costs.”
MSEDCL has proposed these tariff reductions to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, aiming to ease the financial burden on consumers. Pathak also assured that all existing concessions and incentives for industrial consumers would remain in place, eliminating the need for cross-subsidization by the industrial sector.
Pathak further shared projections that MSEDCL’s average power supply tariff would decrease from ₹9.45 to ₹9.14 per unit by 2029-30, providing long-term relief to consumers.
The Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Channel 2.0 scheme will ensure solar power projects drive significant economic benefits. Farmers will have access to electricity during the day, enabling improved agricultural productivity. Meanwhile, the reliance on solar power will contribute to reducing overall electricity costs for all categories of consumers.
State BJP Media Department Chief Navnath Ban was also present at the press conference. Pathak concluded by expressing optimism that Maharashtra’s solar energy initiatives would serve as a model for sustainable and affordable energy solutions in the country.
