Market Yard, 1st February 2025: A significant drop in cabbage prices is causing distress among local farmers as the market is flooded with an influx of cabbage from local districts, Gujarat, and Karnataka. While the supply has surged, the demand remains low, resulting in a sharp decline in prices. In the Wholesale Market of Market Yard, cabbage is currently being sold for just ₹5 to ₹6 per kilogram, well below the production and transportation costs.

Farmers, who are already struggling with low returns, are now facing even more difficulties as the cost of production and transportation is not being covered by the current prices. In contrast, cabbage is fetching ₹10 to ₹12 per kilogram in the retail market, but it is still far from enough to offset their losses.

Two months ago, cabbage prices in the wholesale market were as high as ₹20 to ₹25 per kilogram, prompting local farmers to increase production. However, the arrival of cabbage has doubled, with five to six tempos arriving from within the Pune division on 31st January, and three to four tempos from Gujarat and Karnataka. Despite this increased supply, demand remains stagnant, causing prices to fall by nearly 50% in the last ten days.

Traders have noted that goods arriving from other states are becoming increasingly unaffordable. With no significant increase in demand, they expect the influx from external states to decrease in the coming weeks.
