Yavat, 1st August 2025: Fresh communal unrest erupted in Yavat village of Pune district on Friday morning after an offensive post by a Muslim youth went viral on social media. The incident led to widespread anger, the closure of the weekly market, and acts of vandalism, including damage to a mosque and arson of vehicles.

Pune Rural SP Sandeep Singh Gill said,
“Police received information that a young boy had posted an objectionable status on WhatsApp and Facebook. Based on the complaint, the boy was brought to the police station, and appropriate action was initiated.

A few villagers also arrived at the station. Our police team immediately engaged with village representatives to maintain peace. However, by then, the social media post had gone viral.

There had been a prior incident in the village about a week ago, so tensions were already high. Given the heightened emotions, some villagers took to the streets, and a few youths attempted to vandalize a structure. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The police responded promptly and conducted patrolling in the area. The situation is currently under control and peaceful.”

The situation escalated rapidly around noon, hours after the post surfaced. The accused youth, a resident of Sahakar Nagar in Yavat, faced immediate backlash as angry locals gathered outside his home, throwing stones and damaging property. The police intervened swiftly, preventing further escalation, though partial damage to the house was reported.

By afternoon, tension gripped the area, with rioters reportedly setting fire to several two-wheelers and vandalising a mosque. This incident follows the recent desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Neelkantheshwar Temple on 26th July, which had already heightened communal sensitivities in the village.

Law enforcement agencies, including senior police officers, have been deployed in large numbers across Yavat to restore calm. Cyber teams and special squads are now monitoring online activity to curb misinformation and incitement.

Authorities have urged residents to maintain peace and avoid circulating or believing in rumours. Police confirmed that legal action has been initiated against the youth responsible for the post, and strict measures will be taken against anyone involved in disturbing public harmony.
