Kishtwar Cloudburst: Jammu and Kashmir CM Announces Rs 2 Lakh Ex-Gratia for Kishtwar Cloudburst Victims; Death Toll Reaches 62
Jammu, 16th August 2025: In the wake of the catastrophic cloudburst that ravaged Chashoti village in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced financial relief for the victims’ families. The calamity, which struck near the Machail Mata shrine, has so far claimed 62 lives, while dozens remain missing.
Following a review of the situation, the CM declared an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for each bereaved family. Injured victims will receive graded aid — ₹1 lakh for those with severe injuries and ₹50,000 for the mildly injured. Compensation for property loss has also been approved: ₹1 lakh for fully destroyed homes, ₹50,000 for severely damaged ones, and ₹25,000 for partially damaged houses.
During his visit to the affected region, Abdullah assured survivors that rescue, relief, and rehabilitation remain the government’s top priorities. He also confirmed that the state will seek additional assistance from the central government to support distressed families and rebuild essential infrastructure in the region.
The cloudburst, which occurred at nearly 9,000 feet above sea level and around 90 km from Kishtwar town, unleashed torrents of water that swept away tents, makeshift shelters, and villagers within moments. Pilgrims who had gathered near the Machail Mata Temple were among the worst hit. Rescuers are facing daunting challenges in reaching the remote mountainous area.
Officials estimate that 70–80 people are still unaccounted for, warning that the toll may rise further. Rescue teams comprising the Army, police, and disaster response forces are on the ground, but continuous rainfall and treacherous terrain are slowing down operations.
