Pune, 6th February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration’s proposal to increase property tax by 10% in the 2026–27 budget was deferred on Thursday following strong opposition from political parties. The Standing Committee, which was expected to take a call on the issue, decided to postpone the matter to a later meeting.

The civic body had last increased property tax by 11% in 2016. There has been no hike in the past decade, despite repeated attempts by the administration to place the proposal before the Standing Committee, where it was consistently rejected by corporators.

For the last four years, PMC has been functioning under an administrator, but even during this period no decision was taken to revise property tax rates. After the municipal elections, the administration once again proposed a 10% hike to boost revenue.

Over the past week, several political parties and social organisations opposed the increase. They argued that the corporation should focus on recovering pending dues and assessing taxes on new properties instead of placing an additional burden on existing taxpayers.

As per rules, any decision on tax revisions must be taken before February 20. This had raised expectations that the Standing Committee would clear the proposal on Thursday. However, in view of the resistance, the committee deferred the matter to its next meeting.

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the proposal was presented before the Standing Committee, but since there were differing views, a final decision will now be taken at next week’s meeting.
