Ahmedabad, 22nd August 2026: When floodwaters rose in Matoda village in Ahmedabad district, an Indian Army soldier stepped into the deep waters to rescue an expectant mother in advanced labour and help deliver her baby.

Naik Nursing Assistant Ram Lakhan Kumar responded to a distress call from a flooded house where the woman was trapped amid rising floodwaters. With the situation becoming increasingly critical, Kumar entered the treacherous waters and reached the woman, prioritising her safety and that of her unborn child.

Using his medical training and presence of mind, Kumar created an emergency medical space amid the flood situation and safely assisted in the delivery of a healthy baby.

However, the rescue operation did not end there. Kumar secured the mother and newborn on improvised floating stretchers and carried them through nearly two kilometres of continuous neck-deep floodwater.

He eventually ensured that the mother and newborn reached a critical care ambulance safely for further medical attention.

The soldier’s swift medical response, endurance and courage in extremely challenging conditions helped save the lives of both the mother and her newborn.
