Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) Celebrates Raising Day At Pune

Pune, 11th May 2022: This centre with the moto of “No Wheelchair No Crutches” has more than seven decades of proud existence and was established in 1944 to deliver artificial limbs, appliances and rehabilitative care to the gallant soldiers of the Indian Army, who lost their limbs in combat and is instrumental in providing comprehensive rehabilitation based on current prosthetic and orthotic practices to the amputees.

The centre can proudly claim to have treated more than 60,000 patients since its inception and continues to provide best prosthetic and orthotic care to the locomotor disabled thereby realizing its goal to “Make the Dream of Every Amputee to Walk Come True”.

The esteemed clientele includes serving Armed Forces personnel, veterans and their dependents. Paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF, Assam Rifles, ITBP and patients from the civil mainstream are also provided with necessary prostheses and orthoses on payment. Patients from neighboring countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh etc have also been provided with rehabilitative care at the centre.

Concept of amputee rehabilitation involves a wide spectrum of activities which need an intricate knowledge and deep insight into the disability and its immediate and long term impact on the emotional, psychological and social milieu integral to an amputee. The principle of “care with compassion” gains paramount importance while delivering the rehabilitative services to the disabled.

The multidisciplinary amputee rehabilitation team at ALC work in synchronisation to enable the amputee’s re-integration in the social mainstream as productive, self reliant confident and independent member.

The centre is proudly associated with the Army Paralympic Sports Node Kirkee and has fitted numerous amputee Paralympic athletes with highly specialised running prostheses. ALC Pune has enabled many a “Blade Runners” to represent the Indian Army at the National and International Para-athletics events and win laurels.

The centre has a disabled friendly swimming pool, a multistation gymnasium, playground area, basketball and volleyball courts, wherein the amputees are encouraged to participate in various activities in order to improve their physical and mental health.
