Ashwini Vaishnaw to Lay Foundation Stone for Six New Platforms and Yard Revamp at Pune Station on June 17
Pune, 16th June 2026: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Pune Yard Remodelling Project, construction of six new platforms and related infrastructure works at Pune Railway Station on June 17.
The project, estimated at ₹473 crore, aims to expand operational capacity at Pune Junction, one of the busiest railway stations on Central Railway. The station handles more than 200 trains daily, including originating, terminating and passing services, and records a daily footfall of over 1.5 lakh passengers.
According to railway officials, Pune Junction currently has six main platforms for handling mail, express and passenger trains. Of these, only two platforms can accommodate mail and express trains with more than 22 coaches. The station has two entry and exit points and three foot over bridges.
As part of the expansion, six new full-length platforms numbered 7 to 12 will be constructed. Platforms 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will also be extended to accommodate 24- and 26-coach trains. The project includes the removal of the existing Double Diamond Slip (DDS) arrangement and provision of up and down run-through reception and departure lines for train operations.
Railways will also construct a third additional line between Hadapsar and the Ghorpadi Coaching Maintenance Complex (GCMC) to facilitate movement of trains and reduce congestion in the station area.
The signalling component of the project includes commissioning of a new electronic interlocking system, a dedicated electronic interlocking building and three object controller buildings. An electric loco shed is also planned for locomotive maintenance.
Passenger facilities proposed under the project include platform coverings, toilet blocks, water stands, seating arrangements, lighting, fans, signages and train indication boards on the new platforms.
A third station entry and exit point will be developed on the R.B. Mill Road side. The facility will include a booking office, ticket-checking office, waiting room, toilet block and station building. Railway authorities said the additional access point is intended to distribute passenger movement across the station.
To improve connectivity between existing and proposed platforms, a six-metre-wide foot over bridge and a skywalk linking the old and new platform sections will be constructed. A permanent holding area is also planned for crowd management during peak travel periods and festivals.
The Pune Yard Remodelling Project forms part of a broader infrastructure expansion programme aimed at increasing train handling capacity and supporting future traffic growth at Pune Junction.
