Bank peon held for assaulting, looting elderly doctor, wife at home in Pune

Pune, July 3, 2016: Officials from Dattawadi police station have nabbed a 22-year-old peon working with a nationalized bank in Dhankawadi who had befireinded an elderly couple in Parvati area and then looted them on June 30.

The arrested accused has been identified as Akshay Kadam, a resident of Dhankawadi.

Kadam was arrested on Sunday night following a tip-off received by constable Sutkar from the detection branch of Dattawadi police station.

Police said that the accused had told the couple that his father is in Army and he had identified himself as ‘Kadam’.

According to police, the couple Dr Keshav Gokhale (78) and Mrunalini  (70) had got acquainted with Kadam during walk few days before the robbery. He had also dropped them home to gain their trust. Later he had also lunch with them.

Around 10.30 am on June 30, Kadam reached the couple’s bungalow near Sahyadri ground about 200 metres from Dattawadi police station. He asked Mrunalini to handover her two gold bangles worth Rs 65,000 which she was wearing and asked Gokhle to hand him over the cup board key. When the couple resisted, Kadam first hit Mrunalini with a lid of pressure cooker and Gokhle with an empty glass bottle.

The couple was bleeding profusely when the accused searched the house for cash and other valuables. The suspect then fled from the spot after snatching the two gold bangles.

After sometime the couple called the police control room by dialing 100 and narrated the whole incident.

Police have registered an FIR for offences under section 394(voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 452(house tress pass after preparation for hurt or assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police officials said that the couple lives here alone as their son who is doctor stays in London and their daughter stays in Nagpur. The couple’s grandson who is a software engineer stays in Kothrud.
