Bengalur police arrest two for converting international calls into local calls

Pune/Bengaluru, 9th June 2021: In a joint operation, officials from the Military Intelligence (MI) unit of the Pune-based Southern Command of the Army and Bengaluru police have nabbed two men who used to convert international calls (ISD) into local calls. These telephone exchanges were also used by Pakistan intelligence operatives to gain information of military value.

The arrested persons have been identified as Gautham Viswanathan (27), a native of Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu and Ibrahim Mullatti Bin Mohammed Kutty (36), a native of Malappuram district in Kerala. They lived in the BTM Layout area of Bengaluru.

According to police, the accused had illegally created telephone exchanges in six places in BTM Layout areas by placing several mobile SIM cards into electronic devices and converted foreign phone calls into local calls, thus defrauding the telecommunication network, and disrupting the country’s security. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused used 30 electronic devices to install 32 SIM cards in six locations of the BTM Layout. They used more than 900 mobile SIM cards. The accused had 30 sim boxes each containing 32 sim cards.

Bengaluru City Police anti-terrorism cell (ATC) has registered a case with the cyber crime police station. Further investigation is going on to find out their accomplices. The team was led by ACP BR Venugopal and Police Commissioner Bharat. The police commissioner has announced a reward of Rs 30,000 for the investigation team.
