Bengaluru, 10th July 2023: Police in Bengaluru reported that a vehicle carrying 2,000 kg of tomatoes en route to a market was robbed by unidentified criminals. The incident occurred on July 8 within the jurisdiction of the RMC Yard police station near Chikkajala. According to the authorities, the farmer was moving tomatoes from the town of Hiriyur in Chitradurga to the market in Kolar. Three criminals trailed the tomato vehicle in their car, eventually intercepting it and attacking the farmer and driver, claiming their own vehicle had been struck. The assailants demanded money from the victims and coerced them into transferring the amount online to their mobile device. Subsequently, the criminals boarded the vehicle with the stolen tomatoes and fled the scene, leaving the farmer and driver stranded on the road. The RMC Yard Police are currently gathering CCTV footage in an effort to identify the culprits.

In Karnataka, the price of tomatoes has surged to Rs 120 to Rs 150 per kg. Due to the escalating incidents of farm invasions and thefts committed by criminals seeking quick profits, farmers have resorted to erecting tents and standing guard over their tomato crops.
