New Delhi, 19th August 2021: India may get the first woman Chief Justice (CJI) in 2027. The Supreme Court collegium on Tuesday sent the recommendation of nine names after 22 months. The Chief Justice of India has sent these 9 names to the government, including three women. One of these women can also become India’s first woman Chief Justice of India in the coming time.

The names sent to the government also include the name of Justice BV Nagarathna from the Karnataka High Court (HC), who, if promoted, could become the country’s first woman CJI in 2027. Besides Justice Nagarathna, the other two women judges selected by the five-member collegium include Justice Hima Kohli, Chief Justice of Telangana HC and Justice Bela Trivedi, judge in Gujarat HC.

The rest of the names given by the collegium include Justices Abhay Srinivas Oka (Chief Justice of Karnataka HC), Vikram Nath (Chief Justice of Gujarat HC), Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari (Chief Justice of Sikkim HC), CT Ravikumar (Judge in Kerala HC). and MM Sundresh (Judge in Kerala HC).

The collegium in the Supreme Court consisted of CJI NV Ramana, and Justices Uday U Lalit, AM Khanwilkar, Dhananjay Y Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao.

Since the retirement of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as CJI in November 2019, the collegium had not sent a single recommendation to the central government for appointments to the apex court. The seats of nine people were vacant after Justice Nariman was ousted on August 12. Now Justice Navin Sinha is due to retire on August 18, after which the place of 10 people will become vacant.
