Mumbai, 23rd November 2024: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti Alliance, including the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), secured a clear majority in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections. The opposition failed to reach the required 29-seat threshold for the Leader of the Opposition position.
The BJP won 133 seats, with Shinde Sena securing 57 and NCP 41 seats. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance struggled, with Shiv Sena (UBT) winning 20 seats, Congress 15, and NCP-SP 10. These elections marked the first after the splits in Shiv Sena and NCP.
Former CM Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar hoped to challenge the ruling alliance, but the government’s focus on welfare schemes and development gave it a significant edge.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the results as a victory for “development” and thanked the people for their support. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged EVM tampering, stating “Kuch to Gadbad Hai,” implying misconduct in the election process.
Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar will soon finalize ministry details, including the Chief Minister position. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for Monday, 48 hours after the results.
