Mumbai, 24 April 2021: The CBI has registered a case against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who was forced to step down due to allegations made by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. A case has been registered against Deshmukh and others in connection with the allegations made by Singh and the CBI has started raiding various places.

Suspended police officer Sachin Vaze was arrested in connection with an explosive-laden vehicle found near the house of industrialist Mukesh Ambani. After a lot of commotion started over the issue, the then Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner. After Anil Deshmukh stated that the investigation was wrong, Singh dropped a letter.

Singh had sent a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. It was alleged that Deshmukh had given a target of collection of Rs 100 crore ‘hafta’ from various restaurant bars in Mumbai. Singh took the case to the Supreme Court first and then the Bombay High Court. The High Court had directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The CBI had then launched an investigation into the matter.

Vaze has written a letter to the NIA in his own handwriting. “NCP president Sharad Pawar was against reinstating me in the police department in 2020. Sharad Pawar wanted my appointment to be canceled. However, we will change the mind of Sharad Pawar. At the same time, I would be appointed to the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), the then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had told me over the phone from Nagpur. Deshmukh had demanded Rs 2 crore from me for this work”, Vaze claimed in the letter.
